Weather Details

This snow trek is organized between end Dec & Mar when the region has had good snowfall. Contrary to popular belief, winters are a good time to be in the mountains if one is equipped properly. Most locals inhabiting higher reaches of the mountains don’t mind the problems associated with snowfall and seem to have a good time during these months. Also there are lots of local festivals in these months. In these months weather is generally clear most of the days. Day time is pleasantly warm with one getting to enjoy sitting out in the sun and temperatures would be around 12-17 °C. Evenings are quite cold and one would need to be inside a tent/room or sitting outside next to fire with proper winter clothes. The evening temperatures will be around 0 to 5 °C. Nights can be very cold with temperatures in the range of -5 to 0 °C.

Please keep in mind that the above information is not exact and does not account for sudden changes. Whatever the temperatures and conditions rest assured we will be prepared to handle it with ease as we use equipment of very high specifications

Duration: 5 Days

Season: Dec-Mar

Grade: Moderate +

Region: Kangra Valley (Himachal Pradesh)

Description

This is one of the finest winter and early summer treks in the country. It is set in the Kangra valley with the back drop of the Dhauladhar range. This trek is initially in the foothills and towards the latter part one gains altitude and reaches the higher elevation regions. While walking through the foothills of Dhauladhar Mountains we pass through several remote tribal villages which add a very unique and lasting flavor to the trek. Also we make few visits to the family houses in the villages and get to know the local culture and tradition at very close quarters. This aspect of trekking is found missing on a lot of trails but not on this one where you get it in plenty

Dhaualadhar are themselves a mountain range quite apart from any other mountain range in the Himalayas. It is the outer most part of Himalayas. The rock faces of this granite range are so sharply cut that they fail to hold snow for long as a result you see snow in the gullies and on top. During this trek we walk through many Gaddi tribal villages. Gaddi is a semi nomadic shepherd tribe whose main occupation is agriculture and rearing of sheep and goat. The shepherds spend the whole summer on the mountains and during winter come back to the plains of Kangra with their flock of sheep and goat.

This is a perfect winter trek as one has the option of staying in village homes /small guesthouses along the trail on cold nights and one is not forced to sleep in tents. Day time is absolutely enjoyable with sun being out for most of the day. There are many highlights of the trek but for people fascinated by the idea of snow their moment of glory would be at and around Triund. The meadows here would be packed with layers of snow and one can walk endlessly on carpets of snow and enjoy the wonders that are brought about by the falling of snow

This trek is absolutely fine for fit first timers as well as seasoned trekkers looking at a moderately paced beautiful winter hike
